Toyota Gazoo Racing Junior Academy (TGRSA Junior Academy) celebrates triple rotax title triumph
The TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Junior Academy (TGRSA Junior Academy) capped a highly successful South African Rotax MAX Challenge season by securing three national championships during a thrilling finale at Zwartkops Kart Raceway.
Charl Michael Visser claimed the DD2 crown, Brodi Cooper Dowling secured the Junior MAX championship, and Luke du Toit emerged as the Mini MAX champion. The achievement delivered national honours across three levels of the Rotax development ladder while underlining the depth of talent within the academy.
DD2
Visser arrived at Zwartkops with a commanding championship advantage but left nothing to chance. The Capetonian secured pole position before winning three of the weekend’s four heats and finishing runner-up in the other.
His dominant performance earned him the overall round victory and completed an outstanding campaign in which he established himself as the benchmark in South Africa’s premier Rotax gearbox category.
Jonno Wilson experienced a more challenging start after qualifying ninth. He finished fifth in the opening heat before a difficult second race left him 10th. Wilson recovered to seventh in Heat 3 and produced his best result of the weekend with fourth in the final heat, securing fifth overall.
SENIOR MAX
Georgia Lenaerts led the academy’s Senior MAX effort in one of the weekend’s largest and most competitive fields.
Lenaerts combined sixth, fourth and third-place finishes in the opening three heats before taking ninth in the final heat. Her consistency was rewarded with an impressive fourth overall.
Emma Rose Dowling finished eighth in the first heat before recording 11th and 13th in the following races. She responded strongly in the fourth heat, although a five-second nose-cone penalty left her classified eighth. Dowling completed the weekend ninth overall.
Tshepang Shisinwana recorded 10th, 14th and 11th-place finishes before retiring from the final heat, leaving him 14th overall.
JUNIOR MAX
Brodi Cooper Dowling completed his first Junior MAX season as national champion, adding another major title to his rapidly growing karting résumé.
Dowling, who claimed the Africa Open title earlier this season, qualified third and opened the weekend with an assured victory. Sixth place followed in Heat 2 before he returned to the podium with second in the third heat. A five-second nose-cone penalty relegated him to 12th in the final heat, leaving him fourth overall but safely in possession of the national crown.
While Dowling celebrated the championship, teammate Logan Billau delivered one of the academy’s standout performances of the weekend.
After qualifying ninth, Billau climbed to eighth in Heat 1 and second in Heat 2. He then produced a commanding conclusion to the season by winning both remaining heats, including a lights-to-flag victory in the last heat, to claim the overall Junior MAX honours.
Billau’s progress since joining the national campaign has been particularly encouraging, with his Zwartkops victory providing further evidence of the development achieved during his first season with the academy.
MINI MAX
Luke du Toit entered the finale at the head of the Mini MAX standings and immediately strengthened his position by claiming pole and winning the opening heat.
He finished fourth in Heat 2 before a non-finish in the third race placed additional pressure on his championship challenge. Du Toit responded with a controlled sixth-place finish in the fourth heat, completing the round seventh overall and securing the national title.
Luhan de Wet was another consistent front-runner. The 2026 Mini MAX Africa Open champion qualified third and finished second in the opening heat. He added 10th, third and fourth across the remaining races to secure third overall in his rookie Mini MAX season.
Callum du Toit steadily improved throughout the weekend. After qualifying eighth, he recorded sixth, ninth and fourth before charging to second in the final heat. That result elevated him to fourth overall, just behind De Wet.
Mandume Kaiyamo concluded the finale 11th overall after producing his best result with eighth in the final heat. Twin brother Nande finished 12th overall, with ninth in Heat 3 his strongest result of the weekend.
MICRO MAX
The academy expanded its Micro MAX programme at Zwartkops by welcoming Zwothe Magoda to the team.
Magoda immediately made an impression. After qualifying ninth, he raced through to fourth in the opening heat before securing an excellent runner-up finish in Heat 2. Another fourth followed in the third race, while a difficult conclusion left him 10th in Heat 4 despite recording the fastest classified lap.
His results earned him fourth overall on his academy debut, marking a promising start to the latest chapter of his young career.
TEAM PRINCIPAL REFLECTS
Securing the DD2, Junior MAX and Mini MAX championships represents a significant achievement for TGRSA Junior Academy and reflects the strength of its driver-development programme.
The academy successfully guided Luke du Toit and Brodi Cooper Dowling through highly competitive junior categories while supporting Charl Michael Visser’s campaign as one of the country’s leading DD2 drivers. At the same time, performances such as Billau’s Junior MAX round victory, Magoda’s impressive academy debut, De Wet’s championship podium and Lenaerts’ fourth place in Senior MAX highlighted the depth developing throughout the team.
Reflecting on the weekend, Team Principal Leeroy Poulter said: “That development was evident throughout the Zwartkops weekend. Established contenders delivered under championship pressure, improving drivers converted their pace into strong results, and a new Micro MAX talent was welcomed into the programme.”
Visser, Dowling and Du Toit will now carry their national champion status into Team South Africa’s Rotax MAX Challenge Grand Finals campaign in Portugal, joining De Wet and completing a memorable season for the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Junior Academy.
