Toyota Gazoo Racing (TGR) Launches GR Kart in Japan
Toyota Gazoo Racing (TGR) has introduced the GR KART in Japan, an entry-level racing kart designed to make motorsport more accessible to children and families. Available from selected karting circuits and GR Garage outlets across Japan, the GR KART aims to lower some of the barriers to getting involved in competitive karting.
Karting is often the first step in a racing driver’s journey, offering an opportunity to develop driving skills, confidence and a feel for vehicle control. However, the cost of ownership, transportation, storage and maintenance can make getting started challenging.
The GR KART has been developed with these considerations in mind, combining Toyota’s engineering expertise with a practical design intended to make karting easier to access and sustain over time.
Making motorsport more accessible
Toyota GAZOO Racing continues to develop ever-better cars through motorsport while working to broaden participation and nurture future talent. The GR KART supports this ambition by creating a more accessible entry point for aspiring drivers and families who want to experience the excitement of motorsport first-hand.
The project reflects Toyota Motor Corporation Chairman Akio Toyoda’s long-standing vision, through his motorsport alter ego Morizo, of making motorsport an activity that more people can enjoy, much like other popular sports.
Designed and manufactured in Japan, the GR KART draws on Toyota’s automotive manufacturing experience, with a focus on quality, durability and continuous improvement. Production takes place at the Gamagori GR KART Workshop in Aichi Prefecture, where a small-scale manufacturing approach allows for flexibility, experimentation and the rapid development of new ideas.
Guided by the principles of the Toyota Production System (TPS), the workshop aims to improve manufacturing processes and reduce costs, helping to make karting more accessible to newcomers.
Designed around everyday practicality
Transport and storage: The kart can fit into most light commercial vehicles, such as the Toyota Hilux or Quantum, without requiring disassembly. This makes transporting it to a karting circuit more convenient, without the need for a dedicated trailer or large transport vehicle. Its design also allows it to be stored upright without first draining the fuel or engine oil, helping to reduce the space required for storage.
Adjustable for children and adults: A sliding pedal mechanism and adjustable steering wheel allow the driving position to be changed easily to accommodate drivers between 135cm and 185cm tall. This means that different members of the family can use the same kart. An optional weight box can accommodate up to 15kg of ballast for racing applications and includes provision for fitting a transponder.
Simplified maintenance: The GR KART has been designed to reduce the time and effort associated with routine maintenance and preparation, allowing drivers to spend more time on the track. A belt-drive system eliminates the need for chain lubrication and features an automatic tensioner, removing the requirement for periodic manual belt-tension adjustments. The engine incorporates a self-charging battery, while a newly developed diaphragm carburettor is designed to minimise the effect of fuel-level changes during cornering. A primer pump also simplifies engine starting.
Durability and safety: Long-term durability has been prioritised through features such as a corrosion-resistant stainless-steel rear axle shaft and fuel-system components designed to minimise degradation. Safety considerations include a rear bumper designed to reduce the risk of another kart climbing onto a rear tyre during a collision, rear-hub stopper pins, and a seat designed to provide a place to rest the hands when getting on or off the kart while helping to shield them from the hot exhaust silencer. The throttle cable mounting is also designed to help prevent the throttle from sticking in the open position.
Supporting drivers beyond the track
To complement the kart, Toyota GAZOO Racing has introduced a dedicated GR app that supports users from the learning stage through to driving. The app provides product information and instructional material to help drivers build their knowledge and understanding of the kart.
The GR KART is available through selected karting circuits and GR Garage outlets in Japan, with further sales locations planned. Accessories and spare parts are also available through a dedicated online store in Japan.
