Unlocking access to mobility with UberNAM
As an effort to cater to riders pricing needs, and to further improve economic opportunities for South Africans, Uber is testing a new affordable option called UberNam.
Moving around a city should be quick and convenient for all. Based on research and data, pricing is a clear barrier when it comes to travelling, and has been further exacerbated by the pandemic.
UberNAM, which will be available in select areas in Johannesburg and Cape Town, meaning not all riders will see this option at first, however, Uber aims to expand across South Africa. This option will feature hatchbacks which are generally more affordable to maintain and run. Uber’s other options remain such as UberX, Uber Black and UberVAN, allowing riders a wider range of choice when using the Uber application.
Data driven solutions to unlock access
Uber’s general manager for Sub Saharan Africa, Frans Hiemstra explains: “We are aware trends have changed across South Africa and consumers are more price sensitive. In these difficult times, we want to ensure we deliver more affordable options with the same door-to-door safety standards, while unlocking further earning opportunities for driver-partners.”
“As a technology company, data is in our DNA. We have the ability to look at the economics in each city and pilot a wide range of new products and features to provide the best possible service to South Africans. We use this approach when introducing something new to ensure the marketplace remains healthy and balanced. For example, we have launched similar low-cost solutions in other markets like Kenya- two years later, it has helped grow the market and helped provide consumers more choice.”
Different option, same safety features
uberNAM will also support Uber’s commitment to safety, as the same seamless door-to-door Uber experience riders and drivers are used to, will apply to UberNAM, including thorough driver background checks and screenings.
Riders will be able to see all driver-partner details, such as their license plate number, name and photo, before jumping in. Riders and driver-partners will have Injury Protection on all Uber trips, and will have access to the Safety Toolkit which houses all Uber’s safety features such as the In-app Emergency Button, Trusted Contacts and Share My Trip, increasing transparency, accountability and peace of mind for all users on the app.
Earlier this year, Uber launched enhanced safety features and policies in line with COVID-19 protocols. These include the requirement of masks for all drivers, and riders, using technology to confirm if drivers are wearing a mask or not, a safety checklist before each trip which reminds riders and drivers to wash their hands and sanitise their vehicles before or after each trip.
