Vanderbijlpark School Transport Tragedy Claims Young Lives

*Update 23 January 2026: Authorities have confirmed that two teenagers have passed away from injuries sustained, raising the death toll to 14.
South Africa is mourning the loss of schoolchildren following a devastating road accident that occurred on the morning of 19 January 2026, near Vanderbijlpark in Gauteng.
The tragedy unfolded during the early school commute when a school taxi collided head-on with a truck on the R553 (Fred Droste Road). The minibus was transporting learners to different schools in the Vaal area when the crash occurred.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, but the impact of the collision proved fatal.
Twelve schoolchildren lost their lives, with several others sustaining injuries and being rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Some of the injured learners were initially reported to be in serious condition.
According to preliminary police investigation, the taxi was allegedly attempting to overtake other vehicles when it entered the path of the oncoming truck.
The driver, reported to be 22 years old, survived the crash and was taken for medical treatment. Thereafter, he was arrested and is expected to face charges including culpable homicide and reckless or negligent driving. It was also confirmed that the school taxi driver was operating the vehicle with an expired driver's licence, raising serious concerns about compliance and oversight within the scholar transport sector.
The Gauteng Department of Education has released the names of the deceased learners, who range from Grade 1 to Grade 11. Counselling and Psychosocial support services have been deployed to assist grieving famillies, classmates, and educators.

The Vaal community has been left shaken. Candlelight vigils, memorial services, and moments of silence have been held across schools and neighbourhoods to honour the lives lost. Messages of condolence have poured in from across the country, including from government officials, educators, and from civil society organisations.
In the wake of the tragedy, renewed calls have been made for stricter regulation and monitoring of scholar transport services. Road safety advocates and unions have urged authorities to strengthen enforcement, ensure vehicle driver qualifications to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
As investigations continue, the country is reminded of the urgent need to prioritise child safety on South Africa's roads.
iloveza.com extends its deepest condolences to the families, schools, and communities affected.
