This past weekend saw students from Vega, a brand of The Independent Institute of Education (The IIE), take home eight Loeries at the 39th Annual Loerie Awards which took place on 19 August 2017 at the Durban ICC.
Both gold awards for integrated campaign work were awarded to Vega students, which is the school’s strategic focus. Vega students started off strong with an outstanding 15 finalists, with eight of these finalists announced as Loerie winners on the night – two golds, two silvers and four bronze birds.
“We would like to congratulate the students on this wonderful and impressive achievement, especially considering the strong competition they were up against on the night,” says Fiona Peake, Communications Navigator at Vega.
“Each Vega campus nationwide picked up a Loerie – a truly stellar performance from the students, who continue to do us and the Vega brand proud!”
Uit The Oude Doos
The Loeries is the biggest gathering of creative heavy-hitters in Africa and the Middle East, bringing a variety of industries together to compete for the highest accolade recognising creativity and innovation across these regions.
The two project submissions from Vega that won gold at the Loeries were Snatched! by students Andre de Jager, Ayesha Kaprey and Lusanda Buthelezi for The Red Cross, which tackles the very real issue of human trafficking in South Africa, and The Dumbest Project by Jason Walden & Maliya Muhande for Pearson, which looked at the 15% pay gap experienced by teachers in America.
Other awards included silver awards for an Energade Lite campaign entitled ‘Go Again’ by students Gareth Fourie, Skye Davis and Divya Naidu, and an all-night print shop concept by student - Michaela McHugh for ‘Fool’. For a full list of winning Vega projects, click here.
“Our students take a holistic approach to their creative concepts and campaigns and strive to develop meaningful solutions to brand challenges. The sheer number of awards they have won is testament to this foresight,” says Peake.
The Dumbest Project
Vega were also recognised on the night for awarding full scholarships to two deserving students from disadvantaged backgrounds who will join the Vega Durban campus for degree studies in 2018. Vega provided full scholarships to seven students this year as part of its ongoing association with the Loeries Creative Future Scholarship programme, geared toward providing educational opportunities in the creative field for disadvantaged youth.
