On Sunday 4 October, the Sea Point Promenade was the place to be. And not just because of the glorious weather. TEARS Animal Rescue joined Paws-a-While and other animal welfare organisations to mark World Animal Day. The turnout showed that when it comes to their four-legged friends, Capetonians are all in.
What World Animal Day is really about
Celebrated every year on the 4th of October, it’s no coincidence that World Animal Day is also the feast day of St Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals. World Animal Day exists to raise the status of animals, improve welfare standards around the world, and remind people that animals are sentient beings who feel and who deserve respect.
It is also a day to remind us to speak up. Anyone who sees an animal being abused or neglected is encouraged to say something. The Cape of Good Hope SPCA responds to cruelty complaints in Greater Cape Town. Contact them if you see or know of any neglected animals.
The TEARS stall was full of life. Six puppies made their first outing and loved every minute of it. There were raffle prizes to be won, a thrift table piled with books, games, puzzles and dog toys, as well as plenty of TEARS merch and brochures with information about the organisation.
Cat lovers weren't forgotten either. Kids played a fishing game, catching fish with a magnet and won prizes for their efforts. A couple of TEARS' dogs entered the “best looks” competition and Jace came away with third prize for Most Adorable Ears. The TEARS team feels their pooches were robbed, but they’re trying to be gracious about it.
"It was an awesome day. The puppies loved being out for the first time and the public loved them right back,"
says Dylan Malander, TEARS Marketing Manager.
"It's always special to celebrate World Animal Day with other organisations, as it’s something so close to everyone's heart."
Celebs and big wigs who dropped by
Dr Amir Anwary, better known to his fans online as "Amir the Vet", stopped at the stall to say hello. Alderman JP Smith also joined the TEARS team for photos with the puppies. Cape Town Metro Police K9 Unit was there too. It was such a treat for everyone to see the working dogs alongside the pets they cuddle at home.
TEARS may be an NPO but they don’t cut corners when it comes to animal health. The organisation even has test results analysed by labs overseas when the situation calls for it. Every animal that goes to an adoption day has been through TEARS' veterinary screening first, because every adopter deserves to take home a pet with the best possible start.
With their large paws, it’s clear the puppies that attended the day are a large-breed. That being said, they’re extremely cuddly and rambunctious and more than ready to meet their forever families. If you’re interested in adopting one of them fill in an adoption application online: https://tears.org.za/adopt-a-dog/dog-adoption-form/
World Animal Day may have passed but the sentiment it carries never will. Every day needs to be World Animal Day when it comes to how animals are treated and cared for. TEARS thanks everyone who stopped by, Paws-a-While for sharing the day and all the organisations who show up for animals every day of the year.
