We are Still Marching funded by Mzansi Golden Economy Fund
Emerging from the live performance hiatus dictated by the Covid-19 pandemic, Moving into Dance Trust is proud to have received a grant from the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture’s Mzansi Golden Economy Fund for the national tour of Sunnyboy Motau’s work, “We are Still Marching”.

Originally commissioned by The Playhouse in 2016, this piece explores the struggles faced by women in Southern Africa from the apartheid era until the present day. It is a reminder of incidents such as the Women's March of 1956, the bus boycott and the recent mass campaigns: FeesMustFall, Metoo and Thetotalshutdown plus the fact that even 24 years after the first democratic elections in South Africa, the struggle continues and women are still marching.
Choreographer Motau says,
“The work also honours stalwarts of the women’s struggle such as Lillian Ngoyi, Helen Joseph, Rahima Moosa, Sophia Williams-de Bruyn, Motlalepula Chabaku, Bertha Gxowa and Albertina Sisulu, who led the 1956 march of 20 000 women to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against the apartheid government requiring Black women to carry pass books as part of the pass laws.”
We Are Still Marching is a magnificent celebration of women, their lives and their commitment, and promises an exciting, unforgettable experience for all lovers of dance.

The first leg of the tour kicks off at the South African State Theatre from 10 – 12 February 2022. Before heading of to KZN for a run at the Playhouse from 17 – 19 February. Bookings are through Webtickets.
Choreographer: Sunnyboy Mandla Motau
Hailing from Alexandra, Sunnyboy remains invested in the development of his home township through dance, and the belief that dance truly brings hope as he is proof of that fact. As a highly commissioned choreographer for both national and international dance works, his most moving work is undoubtedly “We are Still Marching” commissioned by the Durban Playhouse Company in 2015. He is currently highly sought after as an Afrofusion dance facilitator nationally and internationally. Sunnyboy won the ImpAct Award for Choreography in 2016 and was also named among the Mail and Guardians top 100 young people to watch. He currently serves the position of Associate Artistic Director at MID.

About Moving into Dance
Moving into Dance (MID) was born in the cruel turbulence of 1978 Apartheid South Africa. It was an artistic response by Sylvia Glasser to the destructive policy of separateness. The vision was to draw on the creative capacity of the human spirit to connect, enliven, and transcend. Dance as antidote to division. Four decades later continuing our signature of Afrofusion Dance; we continue this legacy. We Lead. We Learn. We Include. We Return. We Lead through a professional company that has produced artists who have been recognised through numerous awards both at home and abroad. We Learn through our accredited Performing Arts Training Course and internships that have produced dancers of the highest calibre. We Include through continued social justice activism. Enable through Dance is a project that seeks to disrupt societal narratives around disability by bringing abled and so-called disabled bodied dancers together to explore unexplored creative potential. Importantly, we also Return. Community is core to our identities as human beings and Africans. And so we go back, give back, by sharing the gifts of this experience and learning with others. The value of this organisation in aiding social justice can never be understated. It is with this background that we continue to do what we do as an enabler of purpose and a dealer of hope.
