Retail Review: Checkers, Mall of Africa

Over the last few years the Checkers brand has not only seen an increase in sales because of their wide selection and low prices but also because of the amount of new stores that have been popping up around the country.

The Mall of Africa has the latest state-of-the-art Checkers Hyper store that has been opened, on 28 April 2016.

When we arrived at the mall at about 10:00 the queue to get into Checkers Hyper was around the mall and was like that most of the day because of the great opening specials that they had advertised. When we finally saw the queue subside at about 15:00 we decided to make our way in. The security was very strict and made sure that they only allowed a certain amount of shoppers in at a time as to not overcrowd the store. We had a few minutes wait (which I’ve never done before to get into a Checkers store) and were allowed to enter the store with about 20 other shoppers.

The Checkers colours were there to greet us with green and white balloons at the entrance but the layout and the products were not what you would usually find at a Checkers store. As you entered on the right you could smell the fresh coffee at the Café Foreign Ground together with the aroma of the sweet and savoury crepes. This section also had a wide selection of cakes and smoothies. A little further up was the biggest surprise, a Sushi bar. Freshly prepared Sushi, and place for you to enjoy it. We were given a taster, which melted in your mouth, needless to say we left the store with 3 boxes of Sushi. The selection of cakes, muffins and other baked goods were abundant at shockingly low prices like two loaves of bread at R18 and Panini’s at R2 each.

Opening specials were seen through out the store and are valid until the 2nd May 2016.
