Foodie Review: Krispy Kreme Rosebank, South Africa

I tried to find the words that would do justice to the experience that I had, the first time I tasted Krispy Kreme in South Africa. Words that describe a feeling or a taste that can capture that moment when the doughnut simply melts in your mouth as you sink your teeth in. This is no ordinary taste of a doughnut, this is no ordinary doughnut, it's a Krispy Kreme!

Maybe I can describe it as tasting more like a cake, a really delicious, soft, moist cake. It's not what you would usually expect of a doughnut, not hard nor rubbery and it doesn't ever get that way! The texture never changes as we had the doughnuts for three days and it still tasted and smelt fresh on the third day as it was on the first!

My hubby was raving about them for years! I wondered "Why on earth"? It's just a doughnut, yes I love them (doughnuts), I love good food, and good desserts, and yes doughnuts taste good but you can still live without it...

Not Krispy Kremes! Their doughnuts are seriously out of this world! Like nothing you have ever tasted before, you don't even feel like you're eating (cooked) dough - if that's even possible!

I can see this venture blooming, as they seem to have good business ethics because not only are their products delicious, their service is exceptional.

A few days ago, we walked into the Rosebank store, the first and only store in South Africa at the moment. I was a bit hesitant at first as there always seems to be a queue, but now I have realised why! There seems to be order in the way they run their business and it was so well organised. There were two lanes - the fast lane (Fast Pass as they call it) which has a box of a dozen pre-packed (original glazed and pre-assorted) and the other lane which we chose to stand in to get the full experience, where you can hand pick your flavours and quantity. The staff are ever so helpful and friendly and they greeted us as we arrived with a menu and cute little "Eat Krispy Kreme Doughnuts" hats when we arrived. They explained to us the different lanes and the process before we even got to the counter to place our order. Very professional and very welcoming.

Upon reaching the glass counter fully stocked with all the delicious doughnuts we had already decided on what our "first dozen" would be. There were two assistants behind the glass counter with identically stocked doughnuts. It was a brilliant idea as two customers are served at the same time making your stay in the queue that much shorter. Once you have placed your order and all the freshness is packed in the famous red, white and green box, the assistant asks for your name to write it in on the box. Very personalised and I love it as it means the doughnuts are all for me. The box gets handed over to the cashiers, who again are two, to follow the same process as before. The cashier then calls your name and you proceed to the cash-register. The order is displayed on a monitor which faces you so you can see exactly what you have ordered and the price. To add on to the transparency, the card machines are also placed in front of you, so you complete the transaction yourself and never have to wonder if your card has been duplicated while you are purchasing.

Safe, secure, friendly, helpful, fresh, delicious, decadent, are only some of the words that describe the amazing experience we had at Krispy Kreme South Africa's first store.
