Olé, Carmen is in Town!
For a limited season Bizet's Carmen Opera will be performed at Joburg Theatre.
Set in Seville, Spain, Sempre Opera accompanied by the Pretoria Symphony Orchestra, brings the story of Carmen to life on stage at The Mandela at Joburg Theatre.
The four act Opera which starts at a square in Seville, and tragically ends there too - takes us through a passionate story of a vibrant gypsy girl (Carmen), a love-struck soldier (Don José), an innocent village maiden (Micaëla), and a proud Toreador (Escamillo).
The Pretoria Symphony Orchestra sets the scene by giving us a taste of the Prelude to Act 1, which we hear through the four acts, as well as the ever popular L'amour est un oiseau rebelle (Habanera).
Their rendition of Act 2's Toreador Song: Votre toast je peux vous le rendre, was absolutely superb, and still has me humming the tune this morning.

Even though the cast did not use any microphones, their voices shone through the auditorium.
Stéfan Louw, the Tenor who plays the soldier, Don José stole the show with his strong voice which he used to the fullest to express his deep love for Carmen.
Christian Bester, the Baritone who plays the Toreador, Escamillo brought this character to life with not only his voice but his little antics, which I really enjoyed.
The village maiden, Micaëla, played by soprano Lauren Dasappa, captivated the audience with her melodious voice which strengthened the sympathy we felt for the village girl.
But the show was about Carmen, and mezzo-soprano Linette van der Merwe affirmed that with her passionate dancing and singing through the town of Seville.
Carmen Opera is a must see on the 5, 8 or 10 June at the Joburg Theatre.
