Theatre Review: Acceptance
"Forgiveness is for the living, Acceptance is for the dead."
Just as the Judge played by Jerry Mofokeng, sat in his chair trying to comprehend what had just happened, so did I after this play.
One needed some time to just sit, not talk to anyone, not do anything but just sit and reflect of the events that were portrayed.
Acceptance is based on the events around the well-known filicides by a South African born mother of three children suffering from SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy) in 2014.
The play gives a totally different perspective to the story that was told by the media when the events unfolded two years ago.
Eva Mazza has found a brilliant way of telling the story from the children's point of view. Using almost a Christmas Carol scenario with the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future. The three children come back not to haunt the judge nor to scare him into doing anything but just to gain closure on why their mother could have done something like this to them and why he and people of authority did nothing to prevent it from happening.
Director Simona Mazza has an excellent cast with Jerry Mofokeng, Francois Viljoen, Lea Vivier and Lisa Derryn Overy, playing exceptional roles to make the show an absolute success.
The show is a definite must see before curtains close on the 16 October 2016.
