Bernard Jay and Janice Honeyman have once again set the bar for local stage productions even higher than before.

The Mandela at the Joburg Theatre was the perfect stage for the world-class performance of The Color Purple The Musical.

With the big band below the impressively all-wooden designed set, and the harmonious voices of the cast members, the show was nothing short of spectacular.

The Color Purple is based on the 1982 novel written by Alice Walker and the 1985 motion picture directed by Steven Spielberg. The musical’s book is by Marsha Norman, with music and lyrics by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray. The latter three recently visited South Africa to watch one of the performances during the first season of the production earlier this year, and were highly impressed. We saw why yesterday - the production is definitely worth the trip from anywhere in the globe.

The story has strong messages from, "everything happens for a reason" to "never give up" and "GOD always has a plan", which are portrayed well throughout the musical.

The Color Purple will have you feeling all kinds of emotions:

anger - at the abuse of the women,

happiness - that through it all, the women still find time to sing songs of hope and praises to The Almighty,

sadness - for all the trials and tribulations these women had to endure,

victorious - when they (especially the main character Celie) overcame everything and things started to perfectly fall into place.

The audience were definitely inspired and empowered by the show, as strong applauds were given during the performance, and a well-deserved standing ovation at the end.

The all South African cast were phenomenal in the characters they played:
Didintle Khunou (as Celie),
Aubrey Poo (as Mister),
Lelo Ramasimong (as Shug Avery),
Yamikani Mahaka-Phiri (as Harpo),
Neo Motaung (as Sofia),
