Defamation Suit brought by Mr. Yunus Karrim of DMC Properties against SAMNET
Durban, March 3, 2017: In the interest of transparency, preservation of our good standing in the community and our reputation, The South African Muslim Network (SAMNET) wishes to inform members, well wishes, supporters and the public, that a defamation suit has been filed by Mr. Yunus Karrim (from North West Province), a Director and Shareholder of DMC Property Holdings, against 3 individuals and SAMNET as an organisation.
The suit stems from a Radio Show hosted on the Community Radio Station, Al-Ansaar on 21st August 2016, to which Mr. Karrim and others of DMC Properties were repeatedly invited to participate.
SAMNET vehemently denies all the allegations and will be defending this matter as a spurious and mischievous defamation suit to deter from the serious concerns of the public.
As the matter is sub-judice we have been advised to take ALL enquiries in writing only and would be happy to respond likewise.
As a group involved in media advocacy we would like to further express our general concern about the rising number of similar cases and their implications for community based organisations, investigative and citizen journalism, and media freedom across the world. SAMNET would like to ask the public to support the freedom of the media to fairly and truthfully raise all matters of public interest, without fear or favour.
