New Learn to Swim Programme to Introduce Essential Water Skills to Children and Adults
A new Learn to Swim programme is launching in the Scottburgh area this spring, offering lessons for both children and adults from as young as the age of two.
For those living along the KwaZulu-Natal coast, water is part of daily life. Children grow up around swimming pools, beaches, rivers and the ocean, and being comfortable and environmentally aware in the water will make an essential difference to how safely they experience those environments.
The need for water-safety skills across the province is considerable. Research conducted by the NSRI, examining drowning deaths in South Africa recorded 2,114 fatal drownings in KwaZulu-Natal between 2016 and 2021, the highest number recorded among the provinces during that period.
The programme has been established to give people the opportunity to develop their swimming abilities and confidence with small classes in a private, secure setting. Lessons are available to young children, as well as adults, specifically aimed at those who have not yet learned essential water aptitude.
Each swimmer will be assessed during their first session so that lessons and groupings can start at an appropriate level. Private lessons are also available on request.
There is a particular focus on making swimming lessons accessible to adults. Many people reach adulthood without ever learning water skills, and asking for help can sometimes feel uncomfortable. There is no expectation that someone arriving for their first lesson will already have confidence in the water. Everyone is welcome.
Bookings are now open, with classes commencing on Monday, 5 October.
Lessons will run from Monday to Friday, with 30-minute sessions available between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.
