What we really don’t want to do is stress about finding gifts for the beloved people in our lives. So, grab a pen and paper, take 15 minutes and let’s get this task done before the festive season kicks into high gear. No one wants to scramble for gifts at last minute dot com. No one.
These tips will ensure that you spoil your nearest and dearest minus all the draining frustration that usually comes with gift buying.
A free styling gift list
Write down the names of everyone you’re buying gifts for, nicely spaced out. Maybe do it column-style, to make it easy to jot down ideas. Then it’s time to apply some free-flow of thought. Literally write down every first present idea that springs to mind under each name. It doesn’t matter that you’re not going to buy a massively expenny dollhouse for little Cindy-Lou, just write it down. It could spark other, more affordable ideas. Or you could find 1 in good condition, second hand.
The point is, write as many ideas down as you can.
Stalk the people on your gift list
Did you struggle with step 1? That’s okay. This next tip is all about being sneaky, so head over to social media to review what the people on your list have liked, saved, sent to you, and posted about over the last couple of months. You could even chat to others that are close to them to gather more intel.
Narrow down your ideas
Right, so you’ve got all your ideas for the different people in your life. Time to focus up and get your list ready for shopping. Now’s when you strip that list down to what’s affordable and (importantly) what’s realistic. Let’s be serious, it’s December, after all… There’s not a lot of time left and you still have a budget to (sort of) stick to.
Look for the gifts, compare the prices
Most retailers have websites and a growing number of brands have taken to selling their goods on shopping sites, so you can flex your fingers and compare prices from the comfort of your phone or laptop. You might need to hop out to visit 1 or 2 stores, but it’s not essential.
Comparing prices will help you create an actual shopping list.
Time to shop
Armed with all the details about what you’re going to buy and how much it’ll cost, you’re good to go out there into the shopping world. Buy what you need, avoid any impulse ‘add to cart’ moments, and you’re basically done. If you’re shopping online, you won’t even have to factor in drive-time and parking tickets.
Bonus tips to save money
Not every gift needs to be something off of Takealot. If you’re known for your culinary skills, you can whip up a batch of brownies or if you’re handy with a tool, you can make a ‘2 hours of labour’ voucher. These are clever little ideas to help you save money this year.
Another idea is to reduce costs in a few key areas, like your car and home insurance. You could, for instance, switch to a car insurance policy that decreases your premiums every month so that you ultimately save more. Or you could switch to a ‘fire and fury’ only home insurance policy instead of the pricey comprehensive option, which is a whole lot cheaper.
