About LaMaZing Maskz
LaMaZing Maskz is directed by Louise McAuliffe, and due to income completely coming to a halt due to Covid restrictions, LaMaZing Maskz came to be.
I reached back into my distant past and skills gained during my Fashion Design and Management Course back in the mid 1980's, and decided to dust off my sewing machines, and to start manufacturing masks.
Knowing that the market is saturated, we take particular care with each and every product manufactured.
When I say 'we' I am referring to the two young ladies that I have mentored and transferred skills to with regards to sewing.
Their craftsmanship is excellent and I cannot tell the difference between masks that I produce and their product.
Covid has given me the opportunity to create employment and transfer skills to two young students, Keiki Mogorosi 20 and Sarah Hahn 20, who found themselves at loose ends during the chaos of academic and financial uncertainties.
Apart from the education they are currently partaking in, they now have an additional skill that they can use at any time in the future in any aspect of their lives. We offer a range of adults, teens and kids sized masks that have even been exported to Australia and as far away as Cape Town and Bela Bela from our Johannesburg premises.
Our masks are available in over 60 different fabrics plus the stunning sparkles and sequin ranges that we have just added.
LaMaZing Maskz have been operating for 0.3 (one third) years and employs 2 (two) people.
How has the lockdown affected LaMaZing Maskz?
Lockdown has forced my original business to diversify from its videography base and due to all assignments being cancelled, we have managed to birth a new division which has created skills transfer and employment as well as future training and growth possibilities.

What measures has LaMaZing Maskz taken to ensure that they stay afloat during lockdown?
Not sure if you could consider it fortunate or not, but I have accessed funds in my bond that were available. We are not making a fortune making masks. It is not paying all the monthly expenditure however it is at least contributing a little bit towards three households. The funds in the bond are however dwindling to a low level.
Why do you think LaMaZing Maskz deserves to win the After Fajr Grind Awards?
Despite the adversity of Covid and how it has crippled many businesses, we searched and found skills already in ourselves, that can be put into practice without great expense, using tools that were readily available. Winning would be a great opportunity to expand, sell more product and of course offer skills transfer to those who wish to learn basic sewing skills, where they too can earn a living from just sewing a straight line by machine or hand. Sewing has already opened up the eyes of the two young women I am working with. They are so excited about exploring the world of sewing and have already taken on side projects like making scrunchies, aprons and are now exploring funky carry bags. I personally am also offering sewing lessons. I have already tutored Cynthia, who is a domestic worker. She is now manufacturing masks for churches. Her employer has now bought her a brand new sewing machine and invested over R1000 in fabrics and equipment, to set her on the path to earn additional income from a side hustle. Winning would give me the opportunity to tutor more interested parties to sew. This skill definitely opens up a source of income for anyone with a desire to learn.
