About Harry Monkey

Harry Monkey is directed by Mohamed Rimaan Ahmed, who creates natural, organic and most importantly /skin sensitive beard and hair care products.

Most products currently available contain chemicals to increase shelf life, create new scents, maximize production and increase margins.

Harry Monkey guarantees the highest quality ingredients created in small batches to maintain control and quality of the product.

Our choices of scents are 100 percent natural (so if you looking for Hugo Boss scented Beard Balm, you at the wrong place).

We use only 100 percent natural scents.

All our ingredients are ethically sourced (yes we check this), support female empowerment and are locally produced (proudly South African).

Our products are created with one aim. To provide our hair with the best possible nutrition to promote growth, strengthen roots, soften strands all without damaging or drying the skin/scalp.

We don't Monkey around when it comes to skin sensitivity :)

Harry Monkey have been operating for 2 (two) years and employs 2 (two) people.

How has the lockdown affected Harry Monkey?

Yes, well we didn't have an online store until lock-down started to affect sales. This led us to building an online store. Also many previous clients started to cut expenditure and the first they would start with would be cosmetics. Lastly a study came out that said beards could hold the virus longer and make a person more easily exposed to COVID-19 so many clients decided to shave. These did drive business volumes low.

What measures has Harry Monkey taken to ensure that they stay afloat during lockdown?

A few plans had to be made, some are still in progress: Build an online store.

Consider a different addition of products (we looking at the addition of a female set of products though we still in product design phase)

Changing the marketing strategy from peer to peer marketing to paid advertising but this is often restricted by financial limitations

Why do you think Harry Monkey deserves to win the After Fajr Grind Awards?

We are what is defined as a home start up. The business started in my kitchen with a small pot and has now grown into a set up that operates still from our house.

We do most of the work ourselves, from product design, upgrades, storage, packaging, design work and even marketing ourselves.

Our budgets are small specifically for marketing as our margins are tight due to high competition and lack of economies of scale.

We do most of our work After Fajr before work (ironic) and the marketing prize will really help us build our name and brand.

We have plans to launch many different and innovative products but these require large funding.

By winning this award we could redirect time, effort and money on the design on these products.

We are different, often we see beard care names to be very strict and built around a similar theme.

Our brand is unique in its name but also adds a sense of humor to a very serious industry.

Lastly this prize would be the perfect kick off we require into building a brand recognizable by many and seen as the first option when it comes to hair and beard care. We want this brand to be Harry Monkey.
